Pirotherm vs traditional flat roof
The Pirotherm system replaces three components of the traditional roof structure:
- Vapour barrier
- Concrete in slope
- Insulation boards
This results in a shorter implementation period and lower costs.
What is the Pirotherm roof system?
The Pirotherm system is a perfect insulation system for all types of flat roofs: from small renovations to large-scale new construction projects.
The Pirotherm system combines Pirotherm insulating mortar with EPS boards to form a highly insulating sloping layer for flat roofs, both for new builds and renovations.
Any desired insulation value can be achieved.
Sustainability
Environmentally conscious
Due to its lower weight compared to sand-cement screed, the transport of insulating mortars is less harmful to the environment.
Moreover, the installation of the insulating mortars does not release any gases that could be a nuisance or harmful to those handling the product or to the environment.
Recycling EPS waste
More than 80% of the volume of Pirotherm mortar consists of recycled EPS granules from isomo (EPS) packaging.
This means a reduction of the EPS waste mountain; EPS waste is usually regarded as a problem waste that is often still incinerated.
Saving natural resources
The reuse of EPS packaging also means savings in terms of natural resources consumed, in contrast to sprayed foams, for example, which require the use of new raw materials.
Quality assurance
The Pirotherm system has been used successfully for over 55 years. Thanks to this extensive experience, we can offer the most suitable and sustainable solution for every flat roof.
To guarantee perfect installation, the Pirotherm system is installed exclusively by certified contractors.
In addition, the system is ATG certified and has been extensively tested by accredited laboratories.
These test reports include fire tests, wind load tests and durability reports (>30 years).
This means you are assured of a reliable, high-quality roofing solution that will last for many years to come.
Advantages of Pirotherm
Perfect slope
The Pirotherm system is a flexible system that can easily create a perfectly multi-sided slope, regardless of the flatness of the surface.
The slope prevents annoying and harmful puddles and forms the ideal basis for all types of roof ballast layers: gravel, terraces, green roofs, etc., as well as for unloaded roofs.
Perfect roof system
Cold bridges are eliminated with the Pirotherm system. The entire structure is applied seamlessly and without interruptions.
It is also perfectly feasible to apply it to domes, roof edges, rising building sections, etc.
For each project, the system is optimised to achieve the desired level of thermal insulation or the level prescribed by the EPB report insulation value to be achieved.
Non-flammable
Pirotherm has an excellent fire reaction rating (A2) and complies with NBN EN 13501-1. In the event of a roof fire, only the roof covering and any ballast layer may be damaged; the Pirotherm system protects the underlying building elements.
Quality assurance
To ensure that every flat roof is installed perfectly, the Pirotherm system is installed exclusively by certified contractors. In addition, the Pirotherm system is ATG certified.
Lower cost price
The Pirotherm system replaces three components of the traditional roof structure:

- Concrete in slope
- Insulation boards
This results in a shorter implementation period and lower costs.
Experience
With 65 years of experience in insulation techniques, built up over three generations, Thiers-Horizon stands for proven craftsmanship.
From the early years, we developed our own insulating mortar and have been using the Pirotherm system as a sustainable and reliable roofing system for over 55 years.
Perfect substrate for most roof finishes
The Pirotherm system is the ideal substrate for any type of roof covering.
It is suitable for both bituminous and synthetic roofing materials and can be used with loose-laid, partially bonded or fully bonded systems.
In addition, it is perfectly compatible with hot-welded or cold-bonded roof seals, making the system extremely flexible and versatile.
Technical calculations and solutions
For each project, we carry out detailed studies in advance, calculating the insulation value and the required thickness of the system, taking into account the drainage and the highest point of the roof.
This means that contractors and architects know in advance exactly what curb heights they can work with.
We actively contribute ideas and seek practical solutions for complex construction projects, such as renovations involving difficult detailing, limited height, varying roof surface heights, or beams in the roof floor.
If desired, Glaser calculations can also be made.

Solarproof
The Solarproof system combines the excellent insulation of the Pirotherm system with an integrated solar collector.
This horizontal heat exchanger captures solar heat and converts it into usable energy, suitable for domestic and industrial applications, such as hot water, swimming pools, etc.
This allows you to create a free, green energy source that optimises your building’s energy consumption.
The system can also be used in conjunction with flat-mounted solar panels, keeping the cells cooler and increasing efficiency and yield.
